Can the tarot cards give clues to past life difficulties and how to resolve them? Recently, a female age 30 from New York State wrote to me seeking guidance about this issue: "I wish to know something about my previous life so that I can make better use of this life." Her question was, "What is the major shortcoming of my previous life or what do I need to improve in this lifetime?"

In this three card spread, the first card represents the past life shortcoming. With I-THE MAGUS in this position, it is likely the shortcoming had to do with the Querent's misuse of her talents, skills and resources. She may have been a manipulator who used her skills and talents to benefit herself to the detriment of others. She may have been dishonest in her dealings with others and thus in this lifetime she may have experienced others being dishonest and manipulative with her.
The second card represents what she needs to do to rectify the past life shortcoming. ACE OF SWORDS represents the necessity of being scrupulously honest. She must speak honestly and deal with others in an honest, above-board manner. The suit of swords reflect the mental process. She needs to gain clarity of thought and then act from a position that is just and fair to others as well as self.
The third card suggests the outcome, in this case, a lifetime of building practical skills that result in productive results. It is a lifetime of learning how to use her many talents, gifts and resources for the benefit of others as well as self. This is what will bring soul growth: practical, productive use of talents, gifts, skills and resources and sharing the benefits of such with others.
Mary's Comment: The Querent's birth chart shows indications of a possible past life as a courtesan or mistress who used her wiles to control or manipulate morally weak yet powerful men to fulfill her desire for a comfortable, luxurious lifestyle. In this incarnation, the Querent may have difficulties forming nurturing love relationships or marriages and/or may experience control issues with others in general. She is likely emotionally very sensitive. There could be intense and unrealistic expectations placed upon another and she possibly has a tendency to to fulfill another's needs only if hers are met. Many of her power/control issues likely manifest in her relationships with the opposite sex although she likely has control issues with women, too. Additionally, this lifetime the Querent has a very strong sense of wanting to perfect herself and correct past life errors and a burning desire to eliminate all emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual attachments that prevent or block growth.
